Route Finding
We commissioned a new map to show cycle routes in Alton, and we’re grateful to Liza at Foundation Design for her work on this
Printed copies are available to pick up for free around the town, so do have a look in the Community Centre, the Library, the Assembly Rooms and the Station.

Mapping Websites
There are many different route-planning and mapping websites, with some of the most popular listed below but there are many more. Google Maps is best avoided as it can direct you onto the A roads.
Getting Alton Cycling
Cycle Alton has organised three different classes aimed at improving Alton residents’ confidence with their bicycles:
Cycling Skills
01
02
Confidence Building
03
Bicycle maintenance
The latter two were offered for free by local experienced cyclists.
02
Confidence building
Confidence-building cycle rides were organised in 2025, led by experienced local cyclists through Alton town centre. The rides were about 5 miles long and lasted two hours, with plenty of stops. The rides included information on local safe routes, appropriate clothing, road positioning, hazards to watch out for, and negotiating junctions and roundabouts. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a debrief over coffee. We plan to run these sessions again later this year (2026).

03
Bicycle Maintenance Workshops
Several courses of bicycle maintenance sessions have been organised over the past couple of years. Each course has covered wheels, brakes, gears and general maintenance over the four sessions.
The workshops were advertised as ‘By Women, for Women’, as women can lack the skills and confidence to maintain their bicycles. Future workshops may be open to all.

The workshops are offered for free, and have been variously funded by the Alton Lions and District Councillor Community Grants.
These sessions have been well-received, and we may offer more later this year (2026). Check our social media for news, or send us a request for information.
Cycling Safety

Cycling is essentially a safe activity, causing little risk either to cyclists themselves or to other road users. However, despite the health, environmental and other benefits of cycling, the fear of road traffic puts some people off cycling
It’s never a bad idea to reacquaint yourself with the rules of the road. These are comprehensively explained in the Highway Code rules for cyclists, which were updated in 2023:

Cycling UK has a helpful page on safety advice with short videos. It includes bicycle checks, road positioning and hazards to look out for.

Cycling info
Hampshire County Council webpage ‘Life’s Better by Bike’ contains information about why cycling is good for you, and links to other resources.
A wealth of advice on all aspects of cycling from the UK’s leading cycling charity. Cycling UK promotes all forms of cycling by lobbying for better infrastructure and safer roads, and for making cycling accessible to everyone, regardless of background or ability.
