About Us

Cycle Alton came into existence following a meeting at the formation of the Alton Climate Action Network (ACAN) in 2019. Around the same time, a meeting was held in Winchester for representatives of the various cycle campaigning groups around Hampshire. Both meetings were attended by inaugural members of what was to become Cycle Alton, Charlotte Wigzell and Janice Montgomerie.

It soon became evident that an active travel group focusing on cycling was needed in Alton, so after a couple of meetings of interested parties early in 2020, just before the Covid lockdown, Cycle Alton was launched.
Our early meetings were held over Zoom, the online meetings app, and later when it was allowed, in open spaces such as the Market Square.
Beginning with five core members, this later reduced to the three who have continued the campaigning ever since: Barbara Tansey, Chris Chappell and Janice.
Recently, we have welcomed new supporters into our Core Group: Angus Berry, Sue How, Leslie Jackson, Colin March, Becci May and Rob Smith.
We're now able to spread the workload and to take on more tasks than previously possible, notably responding to the many consultations for proposed new developments around Alton.
We thank them all for volunteering their time and expertise.

If you’d like to hear from Cycle Alton about our campaigns and events, sign up now as a supporter – it’s FREE! You’ll receive our newsletters about six times a year, and occasionally other notifications of cycling interest.
