Campaigning for a cycle-friendly Alton

Alton is a picturesque market town in Hampshire, and Cycle Alton is for everyone who cycles in and around the town and nearby villages.

Founded in 2020, we give local cyclists a voice for safer streets and better cycling infrastructure, while promoting cycling as the natural choice for short journeys.

Cycling in Alton means less congestion, noise, and pollution, and a healthier, more vibrant environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Cycling UK is organising another round of confidence-building rides on the weekend of 13th and 14th September, starting from Chawton.

Cycle Alton attended the Alton Classic Car Show today, sharing a stall with Energy Alton.

The event is perhaps the biggest on the Alton calendar, always attracting a very large crowd, as it did today despite forecasts of showers.

There was a useful display of different types of e-bikes which was of interest to many members of the public, all of whom mentioned the hills around Alton!

We gained at least another 20 supporters, number to be confirmed, bringing our number of supporters to around 350.

Several families had a go at our 'guess the cycle sign' game and won some coloured spokies for the childrens' bikes. We also handed out cycling-related information to many of the passers-by that stopped for a chat.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped at the stall, and thanks also to Alton Lions for once again organising the event. We had a very successful day.

Two photos from our 5th birthday celebration yesterday, which was attended by 20 supporters.

We discussed which projects to focus on in future, and the upgrading of existing routes was preferred: the shared path along the A339 to Beech, the track through Chawton Park Farm, and Mounters Lane.

Wendy Simson from Alton Town Council came to address us and was thanked for all her help for Cycle Alton in the past year.

She told us the interesting piece of information that the ATC bike hire scheme remains very popular - both of the available bikes have been taken on holidays to the Lake District - and to date 20 new bicycles have been purchased by hirers as a direct result of their cycling experiences on the hired bikes. What a positive outcome!

We had a successful day at the Spring Garden Fayre yesterday.

The atmosphere was lively with live music all day and many hundreds of people enjoying a day out in the sunshine.

We gathered another 20 supporters bringing our total to over 300.

We must have been asked at least a dozen times what's happened to the white lines along Anstey Road! In fact we've been informed the road is going to be resurfaced, and 'up-to-date symbols will be reinstalled', but probably not more cycle lanes..
